How to Replace the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Screen

As the little brother of Lumia 950, the Microsoft Lumia 950XL features a 5.7 inches AMOLED display, a 20 megapixel camera and the Windows 10 for mobile.

Though the build quality of Lumia phone is always good, accidents do happen. Wonder how to replace the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL shattered/cracked/broken screen? Here we will walk you through a step by step guide.

Tools Needed:

  • Torx 5 Screwdriver
  • Plastic Pry Tool

Step 1. Shut down the phone and then remove the battery door and battery.

Step 2. Use T5 screwdriver to remove 12 screws holding the rear housing of Lumia 950XL.

Step 3. Remove the rear housing.

Step 4. Disconnect 3 connectors.

Step 5. Undo clips behind the motherboard.

Step 6. Remove the black sticker underneath the battery because there is still a ribbon cable behind.

Step 7. Disconnect the ribbon connector at the back of motherboard to release it.

Step 8. Now you can replace the Lumia 950XL screen with frame then put back all other components back on.

Do you know what for is the ribbon cable that is connected under the board (Step 7)? After disconnecting, 3 or 4 pins came out. I was wondering if it’s for the digitalizer.

I followed the steps as in the picture above after buying a digitizer LCD from rounded.com, Netherlands. Actually there is a good video on YouTube. But after the replacement, when I switched the phone on, the screen turned snowy green/white. I tried restoring back to the old phone, but even that started showing snowy green. Bad!!

Hi Sumit, check the gold finger on the motherboard, if the pins are damaged, you need to find a repair shop to replace a new one. If the pins are good, clean it with 90% alcohol then try again.

Hello, the lower left corner of the outer frame of my 950 XL is damaged. The screen is ok, and the phone works correctly. I would like to know if it’s possible to replace only the outer frame, just to fix the esthetic problem.

Hi,replacing the LCD screen frame is possible, however which needs very professional skills and machines, you’d better send it to a professional person to do this job.

What about replacing just the front glass. Screen is fie, but front glass is broken

      |

Hi,shawn, since the front glass and the LCD screen are attached together tightly,it’s a hard job to separate the front glass from the LCD screen assembly, which needs professional skills.if you just need to replace the front glass, we recommend you to send it to the reliable repair shop.

Smashed my 950XL screen after dropping something on it. Sent it to Microsoft for non-warranty repair at total cost of £160. They replaced the phone within 5 days. So no issues for me.

What was the address you sent it do, or the contact place, email, phone number or address? I have been trying to get info from Microsoft but was rerouted to a customer service agent in India that said they do not fix unwarrantied phones.

Hi there, I too like it seems alot of other people that have bought the Lumia 950XL have broken the screen within weeks of buying it. NOT GOOD MICROSOFT TEAM.
As I had a Lumia 930 that had a cracked screen and slowly disintergrated until it became totally useless, I searched everywhere for a shop that had accessories, like a film cover for the screen or case. None of these things are available without purchasing online, which now it looks like I’ll be forced into doing. This will be the last time I buy Nokia/Microsoft, even if it does have a great camera in it.

Had mine almost a year. Broke about a week ago. Had to downgrade to an android for the time being…. I miss my Lumia

Yep, I broke mine within 3 weeks. The glass protrudes on all of the outside. It’s basically a flat piece of glass set on top of the housing. Very bad design. I always dropped my Nokia 1520 and never had an issue. Not happy with it, but I bought another screen. If it breaks again, I think I’m done with Windows Phone. I’ve had Windows Phone’s since the Cingular 8125 came out years ago.

Hi David, yes, looks like the Lumia 950XL screen is easily to get broken and there’s even not any replacements in the market yet. Well, personally speaking, I still have faith in Nokia (not Microsoft), hoping more brilliant phones from Nokia. 😀
