Accident happens, and most of the time you can do nothing about it, especially when your $700 iPhone falls into the bathtub and you are not sure when the next emergency call will come. Here I share some tips for bring your iPhone back to life from water damage.

Either your phone fell into water got wet in the rain or got something spilled on it first you will need to:

1. Remove your phone from the liquid source ASAP.

2. Wipe off the water on the outside of the phone and turn off it off (this is very important, make sure you do not turn on the phone before it is completely dry).

3. Remove your case; disconnect your headphones, charging cable and other accessories. Your screen protector shouldn’t be a problem if there are no visible bubbles under it.

4. You’ll also want to wipe away any liquid on your phone. Use a cloth, tissue or sponge to clean up areas like the power button, volume keys, mute key, earphone jack, and loudspeaker.

5. If you have an iPhone 4/4S, and you also have the screwdriver to undo the bottom screws, you can remove the back battery door and clean up any liquid among the components, and disconnect the battery if you can. For iPhone 3GS, 5 or 6 can skip this step since the rear housing is not easy to remove.

Then you need to heat up your iPhone with a hair dryer or air-dry it. When you use a hair dryer, do not put the dryer too close to your iPhone, and do not heat any one spot for too longer either. You can heat the headphone jack, and speakers for a little longer. After tearing down an iPhone 4/4s, you can heat the components directly but like I said, don’t heat any one spot for to long.

If you are not lucky enough to have a hair dryer nearby you can also dry your phone by putting it in a dry place with good ventilation. Leave it there for two or three days.

After you have tried all the above steps, you can turn on your iPhone. You should see the nifty Apple logo if the battery is not died.

Some other common problem fixes:

1. IOS failure, reinstall IOS

2. Dark spots on the display, they will disappear a while later

3. Home button, power button or the microphone doesn’t function well, then you will need to buy replacement parts. It is not that expensive if you buy from the right source. Hope this helps.
