What if you break your iPhone 6? Can we trust a repair shop when it’s out of warranty? Can we replace the screen ourselves? In this post, I will go over the three ways to repair your iPhone screen.

1. Authorized Apple Store:

Advantages: OEM screen is guaranteed, trustworthy, free within one year after purchase

Disadvantages: Expensive (if out of warranty), takes to long for a reservation.

2. Cellphone repair shop (unauthorized)

Advantages: cheaper than the Apple Store,

Disadvantages: The replacement parts might be high copies, or the technician might exchange your original parts.

3. DIY

Advantages: cheapest option, learn a bit about your phone

Disadvantages: some skills required, risk of damaging the new screen or the phone.

Apple Store is highly recommended if you are not sensitive to the price for unauthorized repair shops, keep your eye on the whole repair process to avoid your parts being swapped, or you can DIY if you are confident in your skills.

Below are some tips for DIY:

1. Pick a parts retailer carefully. Replacement parts can be found on eBay, Amazon or repair shops. The price and quality really varies. Some specialized websites are better choices since they have better quality control. You’ll also need some tools.

2. Once the tools and LCD assembly are ready, you can start going to work. First of all, you need to turn off the phone, take out the SIM card tray, and undo the two screws at the bottom.

3. The iPhone 6 is made in one piece, and it is a little tricky to separate the LCD assembly from the rear housing. The camera is connected to the LCD flex cable attached to the mainboard. So you need to be gentle when you take apart the LCD assembly. Heat the edge of your iPhone with a hair dryer for a while, use a suction cup tool to open your iPhone, but be very careful that you do not break the flex cable.

4. The LCD flex cable is connected to the mainboard under a piece of medal shield. Disassemble the medal shield by undoing the screws, and take away the broken LCD assembly, carefully.

5. After removing the broken one, we can replace it with the new one, the iPhone 6 LCD assembly has LCD, digitizer and glass lens all together, so it is quite easy to reassembly it.

Now test your iPhone, check whether the screen works and everything.
