Samsung Galaxy S21 FE vs Galaxy S21: The differences

Now that we've tried out Samsung's new Galaxy S21 FE, let's compare it to last year's flagship phone.

The successor to Samsung's wildly popular Galaxy S20 FE has arrived. The Galaxy S21 FE, which was previously announced at CES 2022, is Samsung's smartphone subtitle, in a cheaper version of the Galaxy S21. The base model of the S21 FE starts at $700, while the S21 starts at $800.

But, apart from price, what else are smartphones to compare to? Choose Samsung's budget-conscious option, and what do you miss? Here's what we know about how the Galaxy S21 FE compares to the Galaxy S21.

1 . Display: Galaxy S21 FE slightly bigger than Galaxy S21

The Galaxy S21 FE has a 6.4-inch screen. That makes it just a tad bigger than the Galaxy S21's display, which has a 6.2-inch screen. The Galaxy S21 FE is a good middle ground for those who want a screen that's bigger than the S21 but not as big as the 6.7-inch Galaxy S21 Plus.

Just like the Galaxy S21, Samsung's new budget phone has a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling. The Galaxy S21 FE also features Samsung's Dynamic AMOLED technology, which has the same Full HD Plus resolution as the Galaxy S21. However, the pixel density, or the number of pixels per inch, is lower than the Galaxy S21, as the S21 FE has a larger screen, but the difference isn't noticeable.

2 . Price: Galaxy S21 FE is cheaper than Galaxy S21

Samsung's Galaxy S21 FE is $100 cheaper than the S21. The base model of the S21 FE starts at $700 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The price rises to $770 for the 8GB/256GB version. By comparison, the base model of the Galaxy S21 costs $800.

Samsung's FE models used to cost less than the company's flagship models. For reference, the 5G version of the Galaxy S20 FE is about $300 cheaper than the Galaxy S20.

3 . Camera: Galaxy S21 FE has triple lenses, but different resolution than Galaxy S21

Like many of Samsung's other Galaxy phones, the Galaxy S21 FE features a triple-lens camera. The smartphone features a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 12-megapixel wide camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 30x digital zoom, and a 32-megapixel front-facing camera.

By comparison, the Galaxy S21 has a triple-lens camera with a 12-megapixel wide, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, a 64-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 10-megapixel selfie camera.

This suggests that the Galaxy S21 FE might take sharper selfies, but the Galaxy S21 might take sharper zoom and ultra-wide shots. It sounds like Samsung wants to offer the flexibility that comes with three cameras and multiple shooting modes, but may have opted for a lower-resolution sensor to keep the price down.

4 . They run on the same processor, but the Galaxy S21 FE has a bigger battery

One area where Samsung hasn't compromised is the performance of the Galaxy S21 FE. It runs on Qualcomm's high-end Snapdragon 888 processor, just like the Galaxy S21. That's the key factor that differentiates the Galaxy S21 FE from Samsung's other budget phones, the Galaxy A52 5G, which runs on a less powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G 5G chip.

In terms of memory, Samsung offers the Galaxy S21 FE with 6GB or 8GB options. RAM is essentially short-term storage for your phone. It makes the experience faster by allowing you to jump right back into the app and pick up where you left off without reloading. The Galaxy S21 comes with 8GB of RAM.

The Galaxy S21 FE also comes with a 4,500 mAh battery, which is larger than the 4,000 mAh battery in the regular Galaxy S21.

5 . Design: Galaxy S21 and S21 FE are similar, but in different colors

Like the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy S21 FE has a nearly bezel-less screen with a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera. Like the Galaxy S21, there's a camera bump on the back.

Color choices seem to be the main design difference between the Galaxy S21 and the Galaxy S21 FE. The Galaxy S21 FE comes in black, white, green, and purple, while the Galaxy S21 comes in purple (with a pink camera module), gray, white, and pink.

6 . Should you buy the Galaxy S21 FE?

It sounds like the Galaxy S21 FE might be a good fit for those upgrading from an older Samsung phone. If you're already thinking about waiting for the Galaxy S22 to launch in order to get the Galaxy S21 at a cheaper price, then depending on your budget, the Galaxy S21 FE might be a better option.Which one would you choose?
