One of the scariest things for us today is not the end of the world or a spider, but your phone running out of power. If your phone runs out of power how will you know what time/day it is, what your friends are up to, or keep yourself entertained? Well Stanford part of the solution to this problem.
Researchers from Stanford University have developed a cheap, durable, flexible, safe and environment-friendly aluminum battery for smartphones. The most amazing feature is its charging speed, one minute for a full charge.
In a prototype, aluminum was used to make the negatively-charged anode while graphite provided material for the positively charged cathode. The researchers discovered that graphite is a good partner to aluminum by accident. This new aluminum battery allows for the greatly improved charging speeds. Moreover, this new battery is much safer than current lithium-ion batteries. "Lithium-ion batteries can be a fire hazard,"
said by the team leader Hongjie Dai. "Our new battery won't catch fire, even if you drill through it."
This new aluminum-ion battery can be charged over 7,500 cycles without loss of capacity, much better compared with the common lithium-ion battery, which was able to last about 1,000 cycles.
If this new aluminum-ion battery can be put into mass production, it could well replace lithium-ion batteries for cellphones or tablets. Will this breakthrough revolutionize batteries? We just have to wait and see
