12 Terms You Need to Know About the COVID-19

COVID-19: COVID-19 stands for novel coronavirus disease 2019, which refers to the year of its initial detection. COVID-19 is the illness related to the current pandemic; the illness is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2).

Asymptomatic: An asymptomatic person shows no symptoms of the disease. The symptoms of the Covid-19 infected patients are fever, dry cough, and sore throat, shortness of breath and body aches, among other less common symptoms. This doesn’t mean an asymptomatic person has no potential infection, but it is not recommended that individuals get tested unless they show symptoms of infection. Clinical trial: Research experiments on human participants designed to answer questions about new treatments; in the case of COVID-19 and coronaviruses, the safety and efficacy of a potential vaccine.

Confirmed positive case: A confirmed positive case is someone who is confirmed to be Covide-19 positive from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which needs to be distinguished from a presumptive positive case.

Contact tracing: To identify and monitor one person or a group who may have come into contact with an infectious person. In the period of Covid-19 spread, Contact tracing is usually executed to monitor and observe persons who may have contact with the infectious person, which requires self-quarantine to control the spread of disease. 

Flattening the curve: this means to flatten the curve of infections on the histogram in a period. When the infections are raising in a short period, the curve is steep, which leads to the circumstance of overburdening to the health care system at once. To flatten the curve means taking measures to spread raising infections in time, not decrease the projected number of cases rapidly. 

Incubation period: A period from a person first infect the virus to the appearance of symptoms. It is unknown how serious the contagion will be before a person’s symptoms arise. The length of the incubation period is different from person to person. 

PPE: Short for personal protective equipment, something like a facial mask, antivirus goggles, face protective shield, antivirus suit, gloves and so on. The PPE is designed and manufactured as a safeguard against the harmful virus, infectious diseases or corrosive chemicals. It is specially designed for the protection of our body parts which exposed in our normal clothing, such as nose, mouth, eyes, and feet. In the war of fighting Covid-19, PPE is necessary for everyone. 

Presumptive positive case: an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 by a local public health lab, but whose results are awaiting confirmation from the CDC.

Self-quarantine: the act of refraining from any contact with other individuals for a time—in the case of COVID-19, two weeks—to observe whether any symptoms of the disease will arise after potential exposure.

Ventilator: A machine designed for airflow in and out of the patient’s lungs for adjuvant therapy. This machine is greatly helpful for COVID-19 patients because they are in a severe lower respiratory body’s function. Ventilators are a critical machine for patients with severe disease.
